The IUP tennis team has once again advanced to the semifinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships after shutting out Edinboro University Tuesday.
The win puts them in line to play No. 1 seed West Chester University when they travel to Bloomsburg this weekend.
This will be IUP’s seventh straight appearance in the PSAC semifinals.
As for the shutout against Edinboro, the team held nothing back.
Doubles play went unchallenged, as all the pairs capitalized accordingly. Jarka Petercakova (senior, international business) and Luise von Agris (junior, international business) began the whirlwind of a day with a relaxed 8-1 win at No. 1.
Next up, Raquel Gonzalez (senior, business management) and Rachel Wood (senior, criminology) won, 8-4, at the No. 2 spot.
Right behind these two came Sophie Butland (senior, exercise science) and Katya Minchenkova (freshman, undeclared business).
These two earned the team another win after finishing 9-8 (8-6) at the No. 3 spot.
Singles play went along just as rapidly. Von Agris opened things up with a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
Wood then followed with a 6-3, 6-1 win.
Wood’s win ended up being the deciding match in the shutout against Edinboro.
IUP has high hopes going into the semifinals.
“After having a great day this past Tuesday, we just need to keep up the momentum in our last practice and transfer it into Friday’s match,” Butland said.
Regionally, IUP is ranked No. 1. Nationally, they are ranked No. 35.
The match against West Chester is set for 9 a.m. Friday in Bloomsburg.
