The Crimson Hawks hit the ground running Friday, kicking off the 2014 schedule for outdoor track and field by competing in a number of events at North Carolina’s Raleigh Relays.
With 17 athletes posting qualifying performances, Indiana University of Pennsylvania was well represented at the two-day meet, which featured nearly 60 individual events among 114 different teams.
Headlining the list of seven women qualifiers for IUP was Krista Matsko (senior, exercise science). Both her times of 14.64 seconds and 1:02.46 in the 100- and 400- meter hurdles, respectively, qualified within the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference competitors.
In addition to Matsko, Catelyn Hittie (freshman, history) and Lizzy Cunningham (sophomore, health and human services) recorded qualifying times in hurdles. The latter notched a 1:06.81 time in the 400 competition, while Hittie completed the 100-meter hurdles in 15.95 seconds.
Brooke Smay (freshman, safety science) put the IUP women on the board in the PSAC with a 10.72-meter triple jump in the field.
On the track, the Hawks also had five distance runners finish the meet with qualifying times.
Kayla Edwards (redshirt junior, exercise science) had an 11:56.28 time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Meanwhile, Katie Koenig (senior, exercise science) and Samantha Thompson (senior, biology education) had times of 17:36.44 and 17:41.10, respectively, in the 5,000.
Lauren Lyons (senior, athletic training) and Katie Barrett (senior, history) placed in the 10,000 with respective times of 38:53.07 and 38:54.38.
Besides the 10 qualifying performances by the women, Johnathan Stiles (sophomore, physical education/exercise science) led the men with a pair of notable times in the PSAC.
He completed the 400 dash in 49.07 seconds and also competed in the 400 hurdles, posting a 54.16 time.
The men also had three other qualifiers in distance events. Victor Costello (senior, criminology) slightly edged teammate Nick Patton (senior, sociology) in the 5,000 with a 15:01.38 time.
Additionally, Troy Zangaro (junior, marketing) and Jeremy Claypoole (sophomore, athletic training) qualified at the Raleigh Relays.
Zangaro posted a 50.34 time in the 400 dash, while Claypoole leapt 13.36 meters in the field for the triple jump.
IUP’s men and women track and field teams will next compete in the 32nd Annual Millersville Metrics open meet Saturday.
The weekend after, the Hawks were to compete in the annual Ed Fry Invitational at George P. Miller Stadium on April 12, but it has since been canceled.
However, their distance runners will travel to Bucknell University for the Bison Outdoor Classic event.
Last season at Bucknell, Barrett ran an 18:27.20 in the 5000, and Thompson finished with a time of 11:25.42 in the 3000-meter steeplechase.
