SGA plans community service events for semester

Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Student Government Association discussed many community service events for the spring semester at its weekly meeting Tuesday.

Community Service chair Brandon Andrews (junior, regional planning) updated the senators on events, including a “mocktail party” and potential clothing and book drives.

Sigma Alpha Lambda Honors Society and SGA are collaborating on the mocktail party.

“There will be numerous organizations and clubs participating in this event,” Andrews said. “We will be having a ‘Mix-Off,’ when each organization and club will bring their own mocktail drink to compete with.

“We will have judges to announce who has the best mocktail drink. The winner will give their choice of donation.”

The idea for the mocktail party came from Sigma Alpha Lambda.

Andrews said he thought it would be a good idea for both SGA and the Sigmas to collaborate on the party. SGA senators agreed.

The party will be open to all IUP students and will require a dress code of business casual.

Andrews said he is trying to hold the party in Sutton Hall’s “The Blue Room.” The mocktail party will be held March 27 from 4 to 6 p.m.

SGA is also working on collaborating with IUP’s Golden Key International Honor Society on a book drive, which the society holds each year.

Andrews said his advisers recommended collaborating with the Golden Key to hold one big book drive.

As of right now, Andrews said the book drive will solely be organized and carried out by SGA.

“The purpose of the book drive,” Andrews said, “is for students to donate books, of any sort, so I can donate them to Third World countries.”

One raffle ticket per book will be handed out to all students who donate, Andrews said. The raffle will take place on the last day of the drive, and the winner will receive a gift card to a bookstore in Indiana.

Though there are no dates, times or locations set for the book drive, Andrews said it will be held at the end of the semester before students go home for their summer break.

The organizing of a clothing drive for Goodwill is also in progress.

Tentatively, the clothing drive is to be held April 29 and 30.
