The Paranormal Society of Indiana University of Pennsylvania is hosting Boo for Boobies: Hunt for a Cure, an overnight ghost hunt of Keith and Leonard halls.
PSIUP’s promotional ploy of a longboard-riding ghost was seen gliding in the Oak Grove in the past few weeks.
Boo for Boobies provides opportunities to find truth (or lack of truth) in the allegedly “haunted” IUP buildings right around Halloween.
Previous paranormal experiences on these ghost hunts range from ghosts connecting with audiences that sing in the “lizard lounge” in Keith to photos of orbs in Leonard.
PSIUP has had success with finding paranormal evidence in the past. According to PSIUP’s faculty adviser Dr. Laurel Black, last year’s investigation included instances of a young girl singing and taunting someone.
“The year before on the overnighter, a PSIUP member got a photo of an apparition on the first floor of Keith Hall,” Black said. “We have so many voices of children from here, though no children went along on these investigations. We have had objects move, whole rows of lockers open up, and had doors firmly stopped open slam shut.”
“I have had many experiences on campus,” said Samantha Cooper (sophomore, geology), president of PSIUP. “In Keith I had my hair lifted up and dragged along the side of my face, so I fully believe Keith and Leonard are haunted.”
Cooper said she encourages people to come to the event because, whether any one person believes in it or not, there’s nothing quite like seeing an incident first hand.
“Sometimes nothing happens, not a thing, and we warn participants that they will be their own best company – it’s not like the television shows,” Black said. “This is quite possibly the last overnight investigation in Keith and Leonard.”
IUP is breaking ground for a replacement building in November for Keith and Leonard’s demolition.
“In my opinion, it’s a great loss, both in terms of history of the university and town and the opportunity for paranormal investigation done right,” Black said.
In addition to the finality of this event, Black said, PSIUP is also supporting local efforts to fight breast cancer.
“So often, IUP students are given a bad name by the actions of a few students. It’s a chance to have fun, do good things for the community, and possibly experience something that we won’t get to do again.”
Boo for Boobies begins at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, and continues until 6 a.m. on Oct. 27. One can either register for the whole night for $25 or for a three-and-a-half-hour session from 6-9:30 p.m., 10 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., or 2-5:30 a.m. The three-and-a-half-hour sessions are $10.
Registration and fundraising opportunities are taking place now in the Oak Grove and in Leonard Hall. Bracelets and T-shirts are also available for purchase at the registration table. T-shirts are $12 or two for $20.
A donation from registration and T-shirt sales will be made to the M. Dorcas Clark Women’s Imaging Center at the Indiana Regional Medical Center. On-site registration will take place Saturday beginning at 5 p.m. in Keith Room 007 and will continue until all slots are filled.
