An Indiana University of Pennsylvania English professor ranked eighth in RateMyProfessors.com’s annual list of Top 25 University Professors.
Claude Mark Hurlbert said he feels “honored” to have received the ranking.
“As a writing teacher,” Hurlbert said, “it is important for me to check in with my students to know how my teaching is working. This ranking helps me to verify the significance of my pedagogy.”
Using rankings and scores from the past three years, professors with more than 30 ratings are ranked from high to low on the RateMyProfessors website.
Students rate professors on clarity, helpfulness and easiness, and those criteria are combined to reveal the professor’s “overall quality.”
Although there is no “official prize” awarded for the ranking, according to Jake Urbanski of mtvU Press, he said the reward is “the praise and honor” of the students.
Hurlbert has taught for more than 30 years, and he describes his students as “spectacular.”
“I love being in the room with students as they use writing to understand and better their lives and world,” Hurlbert said.
“I love to hear them talk about their writing and the writing of their colleagues. I say this a lot, but it is the truth: I feel blessed whenever I get to be in a classroom with IUP’s students.”
Hurlbert said the ranking has brought him “tremendous satisfaction.”
He said receiving this ranking has been an important experience that he is grateful for. Since the announcement of the ranking, Hurlbert said he has heard from students from more than 15 years ago and students who have become educators.
“We have so many fine teachers in our university who dedicate their minds, hearts and souls to their teaching,” Hurlbert said.
“I respect all teachers who care about students, and I have special admiration for those who challenge themselves to develop student-centered pedagogies.”
Students’ comments on RateMyProfessors.com about Hurlbert include:
• “He is the best professor. He really cares about students, he’s smart and he’s not boring. He’s awesome. Take his class if you can, you’ll learn a lot and you’ll enjoy it.”
• “One of the best teachers I’ve ever had. He absolutely loves what he does and cares about everyone. One of the coolest dudes out there. If you are able to take him…. DO IT. There is not a better teacher at IUP than him.”
• “Hands down best professor. I learned more than I could have ever asked. Most caring, personal, intelligent professor ever. He connected our class through personal tragedies and triumphs, and I feel so comfortable with everyone and consider every single one of them friends. He really cares about his students and is ALWAYS willing to help!”
Hurlbert said he believes he received the high ranking because he tries to “witness the fine work our students do and help them to make it even better.”
“I think students want what anyone wants – they want to do work that is relevant and important. They want to do serious work that matters. In addition, they want to be heard, listened to, understood and respected.”
